RANDERS, Denmark—Joergen Andersen's usual commute takes him by boat to a 30-foot-long rope ladder dropped down the side of a ship in rolling seas.
Before he clambers up the hull to reach the ship's bridge, the 62-year-old Dane has to tell the boat to either peel away or stay alongside, to catch him if he falls. He always tells it to steer clear.
